hi all iam going it alone this up and coming course season as my fishing buddy and i fell out my (cousin) so ill be staying overnighters on my todd, anybody else fish on there own? its a bit freaky at night time is'ent it you hear allsorts

it can be freaky alright doing night sessions on your own, a few years back a Bull appeared out of knowhere while I was doing an evenings tench fishing on a small lake in Co. Clare. All that seperated me from him was the rickety old stand i was on. but he just didnt want to move on so I had to wait for an age. in the end i had to very carefully walk back across the field in the pitch black my heart pounding knowing that he was somewhere out there.

You just reminded me of a certain morning when I woke up in the tent, listened to the cows munching the grass, and unzipped the flysheet to find a bull ten feet away looking straight at me!!!
That day was the fastest I ever got dressed while fishing-camping.

It can be freaky but it's great, always loved my nights in the Biv, back in the day.
Went through an odd stage of havind mad dreams where the bed chair folded up and trapped me in it,
followed by the biv imploding, very odd.

Never closed the doors, leading to the odd rendevous with a cheeky furry friend after my grub
or boilies, now that can be freaky.

Nothing like getting up at first light though, kettle, fag and rasher sambo and the occaisional
screamin delkim.

When I was in that dark period a few years back, I was doing a night in Maynooth and heard foot steps outside the bivvy, there was a problem with a couple of poachers on the trout lake so up I got for a look and nothing, back in the bivvy, just settling down and I hear them again, out I go as fast as I could and again nothing, that was it, never heard a thing after that.
Had a swan walk into the rod pod setting off all the rods, gave me a fright, seeing 3 lights on the remote, I had a double take before but not three, thought to myself as I scrambled out about how I was going to do this, then I saw the swan, anyone who fished Maynooth in the early days will remember that swan, I think Julie called it Wilard, it was the one that lads reckoned was brain damaged.

I fish most of the time alone... day and night , but tend to do night sessions for pike around this time of year or in September. I tend to get a few hours sleep before i got and the combination of that and lots of black coffee keep me going. Being alone in the dark can really heighten your senses and even the slightest movement can set your senses racing.

Oh I never said I was scared, more annoyed that I had been woken up, I have to admit that the best 3 nights sleep I have ever had were my last 3 nights on Maynooth, it was baking hot that week and I had the mozzie mesh windows on and I slept like a dream for those nights!

Somebody even did satellite Bivi TV at Maynooth.

There were two dishes installed on Maynooth fishery!
Plus there was a quad bike and trailer to get your gear to your swim.
And you could get Julie to organise a brekkie roll and all of the Take-Aways delivered to the place as well!

Nothing like camping at a remote under-fished lake. You just dont know whats in there, thats the thrill of it for me. I was terrified when I started doing it too. Once you find out which animals and birds make the noises its not so bad, anything else is all in the mind, boredom leads to the mind wandering so best to keep busy at something and dont watch any scary films for about a week before that .

Sometimes a mate will fish with me but I wont let being alone get in the way of a fishing trip. Good to have a mate there though for craic and banter.

Who said anything about being scared ? Mad dreams the odd time but never scared.
Give Angle Grove in Woodford Galway a go, thats close to being scary.
Closest I ever got to scared was in France a few years ago, we were on Les Quis and the head bailiff thought it was hilarious to chuck live Coypu into your Biv in the middle of the night, lovely man.......

As for tellys and full Irish brekkies, never did the telly thing allways did the full Irish, yummy yummy,

I have done alot of fishing by myself, Just get a dog they can be the best company while fishing alone.

Anglegrove is all right, but spent a freaked out night on it once on my own after a few cans and John Player Browns. lots of weird noises.

I had some weird run ins on canals near dublin/kilcock/enfield over the years but hte worst was in Galway when I fell asleep on my box, on a stand on a evening session and woke up in the middle of the night. I was half way through packing up when I heard a sound in the dark - then a cars headlights turned on me on full beam. All the while there was a car full of lads sitting watching me. Had a nissan micra at the time, drove around them and out of the forest track towards the gate and nearly knocked down another lad in the forest. What any of them were doing I do not know and dont want to. Stopped evening fishing on my own for a good while then.

my and my mate usually hang around the canal in my opel astra during the summer nights...we drive up the canal bank on the look out for fairies .. it all started after i was night fishing for tench june 07 theres a hawthorn tree (fairy tree) on the grand canal 4miles north of edenderry we say little flickering lights there at night in the trees,,,i was in a local nursing home one evening and an elderly gentleman told me the fairies had lived in the area foe near 200yrs now and anyone who had ever tried take town the fairy fort was struck down by illness,,, i have seen fairies before and have even took pics of them and they were posted in The Sun... so if it was headlights ya seen it could have been us
